Genetic Counseling

What is Genetic Counseling?

Genetic counseling is a process of helping individuals understand the medical and psychological implications of genetic disorders. A genetic consultation provides patients and families with clinical information and addresses a patient’s specific questions and concerns. The genetic counselor will typically provide information about

  • The clinical report and the diagnosis

  • How the genetic variant, after factoring in patient's family and medical history, may impact the chance of disease occurrence

  • How the condition is inherited, and the risk of passing on the condition to patient's children

  • The options for treatment, screening and prevention.

Genetic counselors are trained health care professionals working as part of a clinical team. They are required to have specialized graduate degrees with training and experience in medical genetics and counseling.

Genetic Counseling for Patients

Rainbow Genomics provides a variety of bilingual-genetic counseling services to our patients, in English with Mandarin, Cantonese or English.

We contracted with a dual-Master’s Degree-holding (Australia-trained), licensed genetic counselor who practices locally in Central, Hong Kong. The genetic counselor provides pre- and post-test genetic counseling sessions covering pediatric and adult genetics, hereditary cancers, neurological and behavioral disorders, as well as neuro-degenerative diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The consultation is provided in Cantonese, Mandarin or English.

After consultation, the patient will be referred back to the ordering physician for follow up.

U.S. Board-Certified Genetic Counselors

Option 2: We work closely with Baylor College of Medicine's Consultagene program to deliver phone- or video-conferencing-based genetic counseling to each patient.  U.S. board-certified genetic counselors will provide the services to ensure high quality and effective patient support.

Peer-to-Peer

Peer-to-Peer

Peer-to-Peer Consultation

Physician-to-Physician Discussions

One-Hour Video Conference

We understand that many physicians would like to incorporate genetic testing and precision medicine in their practices.  But they are concerned about the time and informational demand to explain the genetic cause and implement necessary care at the post-test stage.

Physician Consultation - Peer-to-Peer Discussions. Rainbow Genomics delivers two levels of support for ordering physicians to enhance their ability to provide the best care for their patients.

  • Baylor Genetics' certified genetic counselors will provide email-based consultation to physicians.

  • For clinicians who desire in-depth discussions of a patient's case, Baylor College of Medicine's Consultagene program provides peer-to-peer consultation, a one-hour, video-conferencing delivered directly by Baylor's physicians. The ordering clinician, their collaborators and associated health care providers are all welcome to participate.

Continued Support

Rainbow Genomics' goal is to enhance physicians' abilities to deliver precision medicine to Asian patients.  After initial consultation, we continue to provide email-based support to ordering physicians to continue the necessary support.
